The olive grower of the 21st century: challenges and opportunities

What characteristics should a 21st-century olive grower have? What challenges do they face, and what opportunities are available to them? How can they interact to change a paradigm in which their role today appears almost secondary to that of the olive tree?

And above all, how can they make their business attractive and profitable in a context where climate change, new plant diseases, and the abandonment of marginal territories all interact?

These are the questions that will be addressed at the meeting scheduled for Saturday, March 21, at EnoliExpo in Bari.

Entitled “The 21st-century olive grower: challenges and opportunities,” the meeting will feature an interesting discussion with Prof. Salvatore Camposeo of the Aldo Moro University of Bari, a leading authority on super-intensive olive groves, Prof. Salvatore Germinara of the University of Foggia, one of the most authoritative entomologists on the national scene, with particular reference to olive growing, and Dr. Francesco Maldera, partner of Nika – Next Innovation and Knowledge in Agriculture, an academic spin-off that deals with the development, production, and marketing of innovative, high-tech products and services, with a particular focus on precision agriculture and highly sustainable systems.

The event, scheduled for 11:00 a.m., aims to be an opportunity to present the new solutions that modern olive growing and production can offer today, even in dry farming.

In line with a concept that Prof. Camposeo clarifies with this statement: “If we want Italy to continue producing extra virgin olive oil, we need a cultural revolution in the field, with modern olive growing associated with three requirements: an entrepreneurial mindset, a fruit-growing mindset, and specialized technical assistance.”

Resistant vineyards to enrich the ampelographic landscape amid climate change, pathogens, and Xylell

Introducing resistant grape varieties to cope with climate change and the increased virulence of certain pathogens, including Xylella, a bacterium traditionally associated with olive groves but which, as we have seen, is also capable of infecting vines.
